Gayle "Dee" Bowman has always had a knack for writing and telling stories. A staunch grammarian, she credits her late parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ollie M. Bowman, Jr. for her love of writing and appreciation for Black history.
Her first book, “Mommy, Tell Me About African-American Inventors” helps children discover common inventions by African-Americans – many of which even surprise their parents and teachers! It was re-published in 2023 with fresh, new, exciting pictures and pages for young readers to color.
The Covid-19 pandemic, while devastating, provided Dee with the quiet time needed to complete her second book, “Beyond the Mask.” Written under her pseudonym, Mizza P. Nelson, this gripping, realistic, and eye-opening work of art addresses the difficult topics of mental and physical abuse, rape, suicide, and abortion. Many of the scenes take place at a HBCU where relationships are questioned and trust is betrayed.
A former resident of Virginia, Dee is a graduate of Hampton University and completed graduate work at Wayne State University and University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. She enjoys photography, international travel, and advocating for animals. The proud mother of the subjects of her first book, Dee also cherishes time spent with her grandchildren.

I've always loved history, especially Black history. I'm also an advocate for education. Hence, my children's book was born. And it's not just for Black children. Black history is American history. It's world history. If we learn more about each other's contributions to the country and to the world, we'll appreciate and respect each other more.
Beyond the Mask by Mizza P. Nelson was inspired by my awareness of betrayal, emotional and physical abuse, suicide contemplation, abortion, and the drama that is often present in different types of relationships. What a better way to provide a forum in which others could relate, especially since valuable life lessons were gained as a result!
My third book, due to be published in early 2024, will feature my father, Hampton University's first Dean of Admissions, and fascinating portions of Hampton's untold history.
Three genres. One author. All great reading. Books for the family.
No matter what is going on in our lives, we have all had to don a mask in order to push through. Maybe it was a death - of a person or of a relationship. Life must go on. Journey with me as a woman finds it necessary to rely on her mask throughout her life and the lessons she learned along the way.

I am proud to be able to unsilence my father's voice. In this biography about Dr. Ollie M. Bowman, Jr., his life is chronicled, including his challenging tenure as Hampton University's first Dean of Admissions.
This work is scheduled to be completed in spring 2024 and will be available on this site.
